I have done plenty of research into the horror genre, so that I have a better understanding of the history of the genre and how it was developed, this means that I have a better understanding of what the genre demands, and what an audience would expect to see.
I have watched the film Psycho (1960) because the 'slasher' genre first started from this film. All the ideas and conventions that are still used to the present day. The idea of the blonde sexually active women being killed was brought up in this film, as well was the idea of the camera focusing on the knife stabbing shot (point of view shot). This film was a start off to the 'slasher' genre and by watching it I picked up ideas as to what is expected from a slasher genre.
I also read the book 'Legend of Blood' which was written by Jim Harper (2004). This book is a guide to the slasher genre and I was able to pick up some good points through the reviews of films in it. The book explains what is typical for a slasher genre in terms of cinematography and mise en scene. Also by reading the reviews I was able to pick up ideas without having to watch the film. One thing I learnt wile reading the book is just show important mise en scene is, and everything within the shot must match up to the slasher genre.
